Printing Shopify barcode labels on a Dymo or Zebra label printer

Sheet labels are fine until you’re printing a few hundred a week. Then you want a dedicated thermal printer: a Dymo LabelWriter for light desk use, or a Zebra (GK420d, ZD410, ZD420 and friends) for anything heavier.

Both work well with Shopify data. The friction is almost always in the page setup, not the printer.

The one-label-per-page rule

This is the thing to understand before anything else.

A sheet printer gets one big page with a grid of labels on it. A roll printer gets one page per label, where the page is the label. If you send a roll printer a US Letter PDF with 30 labels tiled on it, you’ll get one squashed page and a lot of wasted stock.

So for roll printers, your PDF’s page size must equal your label size. A 57.15 × 31.75 mm label means a 57.15 × 31.75 mm page, one label per page, as many pages as you have labels.

Measure your actual stock rather than trusting the box — “2 inch” labels from different suppliers vary by a millimetre or two, and on a 25 mm label that’s a lot.

Driver settings that actually matter

Print at 100%. Same rule as sheet labels: no “fit to page”, no “scale to media”. Thermal drivers are especially eager to helpfully resize things.

Set the media size in the driver, not just in the PDF. On Dymo, that’s the label type dropdown in the printer preferences. On Zebra, it’s the stock size in the ZDesigner driver. If the driver thinks it’s got 4×6 shipping labels loaded and you send a 2×1 page, you’ll get exactly the mess you’d expect.

Calibrate the roll. Both Dymo and Zebra printers detect the gap between labels with a sensor, and that sensor needs calibrating when you change stock type. On Zebra, hold the feed button through the flash sequence for a media calibration; on Dymo, the driver has a calibrate option. Skipping this is why labels sometimes creep steadily up or down over a long run.

Darkness / density. Thermal barcodes that scan poorly are often printed too light or too dark. Too light and the bars are thin and washed out; too dark and they bleed into each other. Print a test, scan it, adjust one step at a time.

Choose the right symbology for small labels

On a 2“ × 1“ label you don’t have much width. Code 128 is a good default: it’s compact, it handles letters and digits, and every retail scanner reads it.

Avoid squeezing a full EAN-13 onto a tiny label. It has a fixed structure and minimum quiet zones, and shrinking it below spec is a reliable way to produce barcodes that only scan at one specific angle in good light.
